It is the intent of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus to protect the environment, and provide as safe a campus environment as possible for all faculty, staff, students, and visitors. Deans, directors and heads of academic and administrative units have a primary responsibility in providing for the health and safety of their faculty, staff, students, and visitors, and ensuring that work activities do not violate environmental standards.

Unit heads should establish environmental, safety, and regulatory compliance as a unit priority. In some instances departmental or college safety committees may be helpful. Experience has indicated that such committees can provide an effective means of implementing safety programs.

Unit heads should strive to provide adequate resources to meet safety and regulatory needs, and implement programs to assure compliance with applicable environmental, health, and safety rules, regulations and standards.

Unit heads should ensure that general laboratory safety training is completed by all incoming faculty, staff and students who will work in laboratory space, belonging to the unit, where biological, chemical or radiological materials are used. This training can be completed online, and the participant will receive a training certificate upon completion.

Information about environmental health and safety regulatory requirements, and safety programs can be obtained from the Division of Research Safety and the Division of Safety & Compliance websites.
